How to Create, Leave, or Delete Group Chats in WeChat

As a social network, the group dynamic in WeChat is as useful as in other networks. Group Chat is a strong feature of the app and one of the many reasons to use it. With group chats covering every interest you can think of, it is definitely one element of this network you need to master. This tutorial will walk you through how to create, leave or delete group chat in WeChat.

WeChat has some way to go before group chats are truly user friendly. For one, they can be very hard to find unless the group QR code has been shared somewhere. There is no reliable central repository for group chat and your main option is to start one yourself or ask friends if they are members of any good ones and to invite you if they are.

There are lists and websites listing group chat QR codes online but they don’t seem that reliable and many of them are out of date. Starting your own group chat is probably easiest.

How to Create, Leave, or Delete Group Chats in WeChat 1

Create a group chat in WeChat

If you’re the sociable type, it is easy to set up your own group chat in the WeChat app. It can be about anything you like, you get to control who joins and you can create the kind of environment you like in a group.

Do this to create your group chat:

  1. Open the WeChat app and log in.
  2. Select Chats in the bottom menu and select the ‘+’ at the top of the Chats window.
  3. Select New Chat and add at least two contacts to the chat.
  4. Select OK when you have selected everyone you want to add.

That’s all there is to adding people to group chat. You can only add contacts when setting up but can share a QR code for the chat later if you want.

Adding someone to group chat in WeChat

If you have an established group chat going on and want to add someone, you can. You can add someone from your contacts list or create a QR code for people to use. I’ll cover them both here.

Add a contact to group chat:

  1. Open your group chat in WeChat.
  2. Select the people icon in the top right of the screen.
  3. Select the ‘+’ icon to add someone new.
  4. Select a contact from your list and select OK.

You can select multiple contacts as well as individuals with this process and they will all be added to your group.

How to Create, Leave, or Delete Group Chats in WeChat 2

Create a QR code for group chat

Creating a QR code for the group allows you to spread the word and hopefully attract new users. The process is relatively simple and goes like this:

  1. Open your group chat in WeChat.
  2. Select the people icon in the top right of the screen.
  3. Select Group QR Code from the bottom of the Group Page.
  4. Select the three dot menu icon in the top right and select Save to Phone or Share Via email.

You can use the QR code to share your group with non-contacts and hopefully attract new group members to your chat.

Leave a group chat in WeChat

If you’re part of a group chat but don’t run it, you can leave at any time. If conversation has run dry or you want to try other groups, leaving is simple.

  1. Open the group chat you want to leave.
  2. Select the people icon in the top right of the screen.
  3. Select the Delete and Leave option from the menu. It’s a big red button, you can’t miss it.
  4. Confirm by selecting OK.

Now you have left the group and will no longer see notifications from them. You can rejoin if you have the QR code or can get an invite so the decision is reversible.

Delete a group chat in WeChat

If your group chat has run its course and it’s time to move on, you can. You don’t really delete group chats, you just leave them. As soon as the last person leaves, the group closes.

You can transfer ownership of the group to someone else if they want to stay on though.

Transfer ownership of a group chat:

  1. Open the group chat and select the three dot menu icon in the top right.
  2. Select Manage Group and Transfer Ownership.
  3. Select the person you’re promoting and select OK to confirm.

That’s about the limit of my knowledge of groups in WeChat. Do you have any helpful advice to offer new users? Have any cautionary tales or useful information for groups? Tell us below if you do!
